A landscaping company received a €25,000 fine and a criminal record for illegally disposing of and applying hybrid turf from the PSV stadium. This was reported by the Public Prosecution Service. The turf should have been processed as waste material.

The turf was removed in 2023 and transported to an agricultural plot in Nuenen. There, the material was used without processing to raise the soil level. According to the Public Prosecution Service, this caused environmental damage, partly due to the presence of plastic fibres in the soil. Reporting by the Eindhovens Dagblad shows that large quantities of plastic were involved. Approximately 3,000 kilos of plastic fibres were found on the plot, originating from the PSV stadium turf. Two individuals involved still have to appear in court for illegal disposal and trading of contaminated soil.
The top layer of the field consisted of so-called Fibreturf, a mixture of sand, organic material and plastic fibres. This system allows more intensive use of sports fields. However, upon removal, the material must be treated as waste.

Fine could have been higher
According to the Public Prosecution Service, the Fibreturf should have been transported to a certified processor. This could have prevented environmental damage. The court imposed a fine of €25,000 and a criminal record. The fine could have been higher; account was taken of costs already incurred by the company.
Not soil, but waste
Hybrid turf contains plastic fibres and is classified as waste once removed. Transport, storage and processing are therefore only allowed via certified parties and according to fixed regulations. In this case, that route was not followed.
