With the 1946 reusable tray, grower Amigra demonstrates how Modiform's sustainable product development works in practice: less plastic use, lower costs, and higher efficiency
True sustainability proves itself in practice. Modiform and Amigra in Honselersdijk demonstrate this with the 1946 reusable tray, which has been in use for many years. Less waste, lower costs, and greater efficiency show that reusable solutions are not only environmentally friendly but also economically smart.

Sustainability is a core value in Modiform's business strategy. The company works according to the so-called R-ladder (recover, recycle, reduce, reuse, resource, and rethink), a clear guideline for measuring circularity. For example, when it comes to recycling: all Modiform products are recyclable, and most are made from recycled materials. The company also collects used PS products from customers and processes them into raw material for new trays. This creates a genuine closed loop where nothing goes to waste.

The R of reuse is currently in the spotlight. More trays — from propagation to transport trays — are now designed for multiple use. Customers can choose from products offering different levels of durability and lifespan. Modiform's commitment to the environment is also reflected in its annual sustainability report, the appointment of a sustainability manager, and certifications such as the German eco-label Blauer Engel, recently awarded to all Modiform's thermoformed pots. During the upcoming Trade Fair Aalsmeer, Modiform will also showcase a new transport tray concept based on the reuse principle.

Sustainable and cost-efficient
"We already have several reusable trays in our range and are expanding that further," says Martin van Dijk, business development manager Propagation at Modiform. "Within the Propagation product group, various reusable trays are now available, including the 1946 and 1936 tree trays, the 2320 transplant tray, and the 2158 sowing and cutting tray. The latter was developed in cooperation with our customer Volmary from Germany." The advantages of reusable trays are clear: they are more dimensionally stable, stronger, and more sustainable. Growers also save significantly on costs in the long term, as the trays can last between three and six years or longer, depending on use and conditions. Their sturdiness also makes them easier to handle in automated processes, improving efficiency and reducing labor. "These trays are ideal for growers where trays remain on-site and are part of the cultivation system. They can be cleaned and reused, though cleaning isn't necessary for every crop," adds product manager Evert Methorst.

"We've been producing the 1946 reusable tray successfully for years, but we keep optimizing it," says Van Dijk.

Experience at Amigra
Amigra, a grower specialized in ornamental grasses, has been using the 1946 reusable tray for many years. "We wanted to move away from single-use trays," says grower Edwin van der Knaap. "The reusable version is stronger, more sustainable, and cheaper in the long run. We're still using trays from four years ago — they last if you handle them properly." Van der Knaap also praises their usability: "The trays are stiffer, don't sag, and are easier to stack. That allows us to work more efficiently and save labor hours. They also fit perfectly with our automation systems. And since we grow the same ornamental grasses in them repeatedly, we don't have to clean them thoroughly each time." The 1946 tray also offers flexibility in the cultivation process. "You don't need to pot directly into the final container, which means you can use your space more efficiently," says Van der Knaap.

Further development
To further extend the lifespan of trays, Modiform is testing new film formulations together with growers like Amigra. "We've been producing the 1946 reusable tray successfully for years, but we keep optimizing it," says Van Dijk. "Alongside reusable trays, Modiform continues to invest in innovations for single-use trays. This way, we can offer customers a complete product range." With the R-ladder as its guide, Modiform continues to work toward a circular future — efficient, innovative, and environmentally conscious — exactly what the sector needs.
