The TW 280HBD
The English company Timberwolf launched the professional TW 280 HB Hybrid in 2023. This so-called hybrid wood chipper runs on both diesel and electricity. This summer, however, account manager Seb Merckx demonstrated a new diesel-powered chipper, the TW 280HBD.

The chipping season is approaching again. This is the perfect moment for landscapers to explore the market for professional wood chippers, whether for rental or purchase. Seb Merckx briefly recalls the innovative hybrid chipper: 'By combining a diesel engine and an electric system, Timberwolf optimized performance and reduced emissions. This was to meet the growing demand for more sustainable solutions in the industry. With a 24.8 Kubota diesel engine, combined with an electric motor, it delivers an exceptional peak performance of 62 hp.'

Timberwolf's latest and most compact version, built as a trailer, looks like an old-school machine. You can recognize many elements of earlier Timberwolf models. Nevertheless, the company has implemented many innovations. Of course, the diesel engine is 'clean' and equipped with a particulate filter. And while that can be tricky, Timberwolf has approached it differently. Merckx points to the new control screen and explains: 'A new 55 hp Hyundai DM01 diesel engine with a DPF regeneration process powers this machine. This technology automatically burns off the soot filter when necessary. Normally, such a process takes fifteen to twenty minutes. Now, however, you can see on the control screen the degree of contamination as well as the time until the regeneration process automatically starts again. With this engine, you can even briefly postpone the regeneration of the filter or start it earlier. This allows the user to run the regeneration process at the workshop or during a coffee break. During chipping, there is no interruption or downtime. This option is, of course, very interesting for companies that will rent out this clean, compact, and powerful 55 hp chipper.'
No throttle lever
However, this is not the only new feature on this Timberwolf. A landscaper will look in vain for a throttle lever to temporarily reduce the speed during a chipping task. The throttle lever has been replaced by switches. On both sides of the foldable feed hopper, there are two unmistakable rectangular blue and green switch plates. Touch the green plate for half a second, and the chipping unit is almost immediately ready for operation. Hold down the blue plate for three seconds, and the chipper disc speed decreases. This immediately reduces fuel consumption, as well as noise and emission levels. In addition, the control screen, where all information is displayed, has been updated. You can now also connect the chipper to your smartphone via the IQANgo app. With this app, the user can perform a full machine diagnosis. If there are still uncertainties, the dealer or rental company can log in remotely to this Timberwolf chipper, provided the landscaper is connected via the IQANgo app.
Hard wood
Naturally, this special Hyundai diesel engine is equipped with a complete diagnostic system, readable on the control screen. In addition, it features a well-functioning No Stress system, which Timberwolf has further optimized compared to earlier versions. Merckx: 'My first demonstration of this machine was at the end of June at Snijder Boomverzorging in Lekkerkerk. They had to remove a dead beech tree for a private client and chip the wood. This was a perfect test case for the compact machine, which had to avoid damaging the beautiful garden. Dead beech wood is, as is well known, extremely hard and difficult to chip.'
Thick, dead beech wood goes into the chipper
'As soon as they fed a branch as thick as a thigh into the machine, it seemed as if the chipper briefly hesitated each time, working the hard, dry beech wood inside. This process is automatically controlled by the upper and lower rollers, which ensures that the machine cannot jam. Processing the wood posed no problem at all. I do advise feeding the thinner end of a thick branch or trunk into the chipper first. Thinner wood with side branches, however, is easily pulled in by the machine itself. I have already performed many demonstrations with this machine, and we will also be taking it to the Hoveniersdag this autumn.'
Small chips
Another thing that stands out is the relatively thin discharge chute with reflector. Merckx explains: 'On the chipper disc, there is not one blade across the full length, but two shorter blades, each with an opening. This makes the cutting against the fixed blade much smoother. One blade cuts the incoming wood first on one side of the trunk against the fixed blade, and a fraction later, half a revolution later, the second blade cuts the other side. This reduces the impact on the chipper disc, and the wood chips are 19 millimeters smaller than conventional ones. Thanks to these smaller wood particles, a narrower pipe suffices, while the venturi effect increases the airflow speed in the discharge chute.'
A thick, solid bolt guarantees proper alignment when reinstalling the short blades
Also on tracks
Merckx continues: 'We have therefore demonstrated that this new compact machine can effortlessly process thick pieces of dead wood. This makes it possible for arborists and landscapers to show up at a client's location with a relatively light and maneuverable machine, without damaging, for example, the paving with the tandem axle. Of course, when working on wet ground, the use of track mats is recommended. But... I can now also announce that this autumn Timberwolf will introduce exactly the same chipper, but on tracks. This TW 280FTRd will be mounted on rubber tracks with a fixed track width of 1410 millimeters.'
