Cumela and MKB INFRA will now continue as one. On 19 June, the members of both trade associations unanimously approved a merger. The activities of MKB INFRA will be incorporated into a new statutory section within Cumela.
With the merger, the associations aim to strengthen advocacy for SMEs in the green, ground, and infrastructure sector. According to the boards, this is much needed, as the sector plays a key role in societal challenges such as housing, the energy transition, and climate adaptation. 'Our members possess the knowledge, experience and equipment that are crucial to carrying out these tasks,' says Carolien van Vliet, chair of Cumela. 'By joining forces, we create a strong organisation with a single recognisable voice towards politics, policymakers, and clients.'

A distinct identity within a larger organisation
The new MKB INFRA Section within Cumela will have its own board and a clear position. Philip van Nieuwenhuizen, formerly chair/director of MKB INFRA, has been appointed section chair and will join Cumela's executive board. 'We are preserving the ideas and network of MKB INFRA, while gaining in effectiveness, scale, and service provision,' says Van Nieuwenhuizen.

With the addition of MKB INFRA, Cumela is growing not only in membership but also in influence.

Growth in size and significance
Cumela represents around 2,000 companies in the green, ground, and infrastructure sector. Together, they own about 70 percent of the mobile equipment in the Netherlands and generate an annual turnover of over 8 billion euros. Most members are family businesses located in rural areas. With the arrival of MKB INFRA, Cumela is growing not only in membership numbers but also in influence. The merger is expected to contribute to a stronger position towards government and better support for the affiliated companies.
