Sortability is playing an increasingly important role. Recycling often starts with the ability to recognize certain materials in the waste process. Modiform responds cleverly to this with its detectable transport trays that can be recognized in sorting facilities and thus get a second life.

The importance of detectability in both B2C and B2B
Many plastic packages end up in incineration simply because they cannot be detected by sorting machines using nIR detection. This especially applies to dark-colored plastics such as black polystyrene. These colors absorb the near-infrared (nIR) light used to identify materials and therefore are not sorted out. As a result, a material that is otherwise perfectly recyclable ends up as residual waste. Packs for bedding plants usually end up in consumer waste, where it is sorted by type of plastic using nIR detection systems. For this reason, Modiform only stocks nIR-detectable packs. Transport trays, on the other hand, are not meant to end up with consumers, as they are often too large to be recycled via consumer waste streams. It is therefore important that garden centers do not hand out plastic transport trays to consumers but instead use cardboard alternatives, such as Modiform's ecoExpert transport tray range. Transport trays that remain in the B2B circuit can be perfectly recycled when the types of plastic are delivered separately to a recycler. At retail locations, plastics can also be collected together, and in such cases, it is also important for business waste recyclers that the trays are detectable.
JustGrey: detectable grey
With JustGrey, Modiform introduces a material that is NIR-detectable. Due to the light grey PS material, sorting machines can recognize it without any issues. It is therefore a good alternative to black polystyrene: it is just as strong and functional but has a higher chance of being reused. In addition to JustGrey, Modiform also offers white and transparent PS trays that are NIR-detectable.
Certified sustainable
To maximize the chances of trays and packs being recycled, Modiform collaborates with Institut cyclos-HTP in Aachen, where recycling tests are conducted with various materials and where the Cyclos recycling certificate is issued. Modiform's PS materials JustGrey, white, transparent, and cool grey, as well as transparent green PET, are Cyclos certified, demonstrating that these materials are recyclable within a large part of the European infrastructure. This certification is not only important for customers but is also becoming increasingly relevant for participation in sustainable procurement projects such as public tenders.
