In line with the new EU PPWR legislation, Modiform has further expanded its range of transport trays. Recently, Modiform filed a patent for a new reusable transport tray system that easily integrates into existing processes.

The system, with various models, has minimal impact on existing processes, is easy to handle logistically and in storage, is recyclable, and complies with the new legislation. This new reusable tray system will be presented for the first time at IPM in Essen.

In line with EU legislation

In 2024, the new Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) came into effect, which also covers transport trays for plant pots. This EU legislation aims to ensure that the majority of transport trays are reused within the EU: by 2030, plastic transport packaging must be reusable for transport within a single EU country or within one company. In other cases, forty percent of transport packaging must be reusable.

Until now, transport trays have been developed based on the needs and preferences of growers for the cultivation and transport of their plants. The resulting range of transport trays offers growers optimal transport efficiency. With the transition from single-use to reusable trays, storage must also be considered—at growers' sites, at return locations, and at retailers. A wide variety of trays can make stacking used trays very space-consuming—space that is often unavailable.

Optimal system

That's why Modiform has developed a new transport tray system that is well-suited for reuse, enables efficient transport, and is also optimized for storage. The system is highly universal and does not compromise on plant/pot specificity as was already possible with single-use trays.

The system consists of four carrier formats with external dimensions aligned with the Normpack series: NP 200 (400x280 mm), NP 400 (562x253 mm), NP 300 (562x315 mm), and NP Cactus (270x248 mm). Each size comes in two variants: with bottom holes or with water reservoirs. This results in a total of eight universal carriers. The carriers are designed for reuse and are made of plastic, consisting of at least 35% recycled plastic and are themselves recyclable.

Cardboard inlays

These universal carriers are designed to be combined with a wide range of cardboard inlays. These inlays are available in many versions similar to the Normpack® series. After use, the inlays can be disposed of with cardboard waste for recycling.

Gert-Jan Smal, Senior Product Consultant at Modiform: "We took on the challenge of developing something as universal as possible that also meets the needs of individual customers. I'm pleased to share that we succeeded in creating something that is easy to use and strong and stable."
