'Bulb Mania Mix' is a collaboration between Keukenhof, Rijnbeek Perennials and JUB Holland, designed by Carien van Boxtel
'A striking piece of nature among the iconic colour blocks of bulb flowers.' Visitors to Keukenhof were surprised this year by a border featuring a varied mix of perennials and naturalising bulbs. And the response from visitors was overwhelmingly positive, according to an evaluation by the collaborating parties.

The teams from JUB Holland, Rijnbeek Perennials and Keukenhof met at the Bulb Mania Mix in the spring park for an evaluation. The border was planted in December 2023 with a varied selection of naturalising bulbs and perennials. The parties came together to review the development of the border, exchange feedback and experiences, and make plans for the upcoming season.

Again next year
Arno Rijnbeek of Rijnbeek Perennials summarises the experience: "The Bulb Mania Mix was designed by landscape and garden designer Carien van Boxtel and planted in close collaboration with Keukenhof designer Frans Beijk and his team of gardeners. The border creates a natural, meadow-like look within Keukenhof, with an exceptionally long flowering season. You can tell when you're standing here that visitors really take their time to observe the unusual flowers and foliage structures. The information board with QR code supports this, offering visitors more details about plants they might not typically associate with Keukenhof. While most plantings are removed after Keukenhof closes, the naturalising bulbs and perennials of the Bulb Mania Mix will remain in the ground to bloom again next year. They're expected to return even earlier and more exuberantly than during this first season, as the plants are now well established."

Ten-m² packs
The team from JUB Holland, one of Keukenhof's original contributors, regularly brings clients and contacts from the Netherlands and abroad to Keukenhof throughout the season. Robbert Uittenbogaard reflects: "A visit to the park has become a fixed part of our JUB Study Days and offers an excellent opportunity to present new ideas like this mixed border, spark discussion, and gather feedback. Our clients, and we ourselves too, were positively surprised by the early flowering, the unique leaf textures, and the wide variety. The Bulb Mania Mix forms a lovely combination with our own Indigo design, which is located right next to it. It offers inspiration to our clients and Keukenhof visitors for their own garden and landscape projects. We've even already received the first requests for ten-square-metre Bulb Mania Mix packs, which we will be developing together."

New flowers every week
Keukenhof is also enthusiastic about the new development. Designer Frans Beijk: "The border is performing better than expected and quickly gained momentum. It's great to see that almost every week different flowers take the spotlight within this unique mix. In the beginning it was the botanical tulips, Euphorbia, and Mertensia that caught attention; now it's the turn of white late daffodils, Anemone, Camassia, and Centaurea. So there's always something new to discover, and it keeps surprising. Even the old tree trunks, which were given a new purpose in the border, are planted with Fritillaria and Helleborus. They've provided many surprising photo moments. We're looking forward with interest to the development of this border in the next Keukenhof season."

Keukenhof is open until 12 May. The Bulb Mania Mix can be found on the eastern edge of the park, across the bridge by the windmill.
