New generation of semi-paving responds to stricter environmental requirements and growing demand for low-maintenance solutions

Semi-paving has been gaining ground in public space for years. At the same time, the market is changing quickly due to stricter regulations and uncertainty around materials. De Beijer Bouwgrondstoffen has completely stopped selling its well-known semi-paving product Graustabiel and is now introducing GrauMix: a new product, completely free of steel slag. According to product specialist Rik van der Mispel, GrauMix meets the requirements of today and tomorrow.

An important starting point in the development is that the products are bonded, but without the use of steel slag. 'We combine stability with a natural appearance. And we ensure that the product meets current and future environmental requirements.' Demand for semi-paving has been growing for some time. Municipalities in particular are looking for solutions that are water-permeable and require little maintenance. 'We have seen clear growth in this market for ten to fifteen years,' says Rik van der Mispel, semi-paving specialist at De Beijer Bouwgrondstoffen. 'Climate adaptation plays a major role in this. Water needs to be able to drain away, and semi-paving often makes that easier than closed paving.'

'Municipalities are mainly looking for solutions that require as little maintenance as possible'

Uncertainty due to temporary regulation

At the same time, De Beijer Bouwgrondstoffen is in full transition. According to Van der Mispel, the temporary ban on the use of steel slag has created a gap. 'The hardness of products containing steel slag cannot be matched. As a result, the market is looking for alternatives. That is what we are responding to.' This uncertainty affects projects. Choices are sometimes postponed, while the task in public space remains. Clients and contractors still need to move forward. 'The pause button has been pressed on the use of steel slag and regulations will change, but practice continues in the meantime. You cannot put everything on hold until there is clarity. Thanks to the expertise of De Beijer Bouwgrondstoffen, projects can simply continue.'

New: GrauMix in three variants

De Beijer Bouwgrondstoffen is launching GrauMix in three variants: Primair, Circulair and Bio. The first two are already available; the Bio variant will follow later. GrauMix Primair consists entirely of natural stone types with strong bonding properties, such as greywacke and dolomite. Van der Mispel: 'In terms of appearance, this variant is closest to the old Graustabiel product that many people already know. That is useful for maintenance or extension of existing paths.' The product has a sand colour.

GrauMix Circulair contains a secondary aggregate in addition to natural stone. This responds to the demand for reuse of materials. 'You use fewer new raw materials, which ties in with the circular ambitions of organisations such as municipalities.' The colour is light yellow and gives the appearance of a sandy road.

The third variant, GrauMix Bio, differs through the use of a complex biopolymer. 'This biopolymer gives the mineral raw materials extra bonding strength. The contractor, the client and the user will experience this as highly positive, as the strength of the top layer increases. The colour is variegated and has a very natural appearance.'

In addition to technical properties, appearance also plays a role. The three variants each have their own colour: 'They are soft, natural colours. That looks calmer than dark paving and also heats up less in the sun.' According to Van der Mispel, the Circulair variant is reminiscent of a classic sandy road. 'That fits well in a natural environment or historical setting.'

'We combine stability with a natural appearance'

Particularly strong where cars disappear

The products are intended for broad use in public space. Examples include walking and cycling paths, parks, squares and cemeteries. 'This is very suitable for pedestrians and cyclists. With a properly founded substructure with sufficient load-bearing capacity, maintenance vehicles can also drive over it without problems. But for heavy and continuous car traffic, I would be less quick to recommend it.' He sees opportunities particularly in urban areas. 'Cars are increasingly disappearing from parks and squares. Then you automatically arrive at these types of solutions. The debate on regulations will continue for years. We have already made our assessment, rolled up our sleeves and moved on.'

Anyone wishing to view the new GrauMix variants can contact 088-4006360 or debeijerbv.com to make an appointment for a visit to the Dodewaard site. In addition to the new GrauMix, all other types of semi-paving can also be viewed there. The full range can also be seen at halfverharding.nl.
