In Amsterdam, a padel court has been realised at nearly 40 metres high on the roof of an office and residential building. With the Rooftop Padel project for The Bridge, not only a distinctive sports facility has been added to the city, but also a new direction has been introduced for the design of sports facilities in densely built urban environments.
The rooftop court positions itself as the highest padel court in the Netherlands and is among the highest rooftop padel courts in Europe. The project shows how sport, engineering and space use come together in locations where available square metres are limited. Constructing a padel court at approximately 39 metres above ground level involves significant technical challenges. At this height, factors such as wind load, structural capacity, vibrations and dynamic loads play an important role. In addition, sustainability, water drainage and logistics were key factors in the design process.
Design
Padel Sport Benelux was responsible for the technical design, calculations and final realisation. For the sports-technical foundation, the shock-absorbing and water-permeable sports floor system from SuperSub Sportsystems was selected, ensuring both playing comfort and protection of the underlying structure. Installation at height was supported by Faber Betonpompen, enabling access and execution at this level.
The padel court is constructed with a Super Full Panorama cage. This provides maximum transparency and a high-quality appearance. The result is an open and light playing environment, offering players unobstructed views over Amsterdam. The combination of height, views and urban context creates a unique playing experience that differs from traditional padel locations.
