At the GCSAA Show in Orlando, Smithco presented the Ultra XL70-E, the electric version of the well-known three-section Ultra XL70 greens roller. The machine was developed to match the weight of the popular original as closely as possible, while offering a reliable zero-emission drive.
The Ultra XL70-E is seven kilograms lighter than the petrol variant, bringing the total weight to 404 kilograms. This minimal difference ensures that rolling characteristics remain the same. The weight is evenly distributed over three rollers, resulting in a ground pressure of 3.7 psi (0.26 bar).
A hybrid system has been chosen for the drive. A lithium iron phosphate battery (LiFePO4) supplies power to an electro-hydraulic system with load sensing. In this closed system, only one litre of hydraulic oil circulates, operating at low pressure and a maximum temperature of 40 degrees Celsius. The centrally positioned foot pedal only demands power when the machine is moving, reducing both energy consumption and noise levels. According to Smithco, this solution also prevents the high power peaks that typically occur in electric greens rollers during constant acceleration and deceleration.
The first Ultra XL70-E machines will be delivered to Bernardus Golf and will be used in September during the Solheim Cup, reports distributor Pols. Additional machines have also been ordered for demonstrations in the Benelux.
