The market for robotic mowers is rapidly shifting towards wireless systems. According to EGO, the traditional robot with boundary wire is becoming obsolete. During a presentation, Director of Sales Gerco de Graaf explained the new direction. The reason is the introduction of a new family of robots: the Aura R2, with capacities of 1,500, 3,000 and 6,000 square metres respectively.
'We used to be behind with our robotic mowers. But with this new generation, we are immediately competing at the highest level,' says De Graaf. 'We combine several technologies in one system. This allows us to continue mowing under almost all conditions.'
RTK as a basis
The navigation is based on RTK (Real Time Kinematic). This allows the robot to determine its position very accurately via satellites. This system is now widely used, but has limitations in areas with trees or weak signals. EGO therefore combines RTK with two additional technologies in its own Path IQ system. VIO (Visual Inertial Odometry) uses cameras and motion sensors to continuously calculate where the robot is and how it moves. Even without a satellite signal, the mower can continue to track its position. VSLAM (Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) enables the robot to build a digital map of the garden itself. Based on camera images, the machine recognises objects and locations and 'remembers' previous routes. 'RTK is strong in positioning, but has limitations. By combining it with VIO and VSLAM, you get a system that continues to operate reliably,' says De Graaf. The next step is already emerging: LiDAR, which measures distances even more precisely. What does this mean for existing systems?
'Systems with boundary wires are essentially outdated. The market is moving rapidly towards wireless solutions. Consumers no longer want installation and want to monitor everything via an app.' According to him, systems that rely on fixed lines or routes are also becoming obsolete. 'The robot must understand the garden itself. That is the new standard.'

Role for specialist dealers remains central
Despite the technological leap, EGO continues to rely on specialist dealers. 'We supply through dealers and will continue to do so. Installation, advice and service are essential. That is also where the revenue model for dealers lies.'

Rapid market development
The European market now accounts for nearly one million robotic mowers sold per year. Growth is mainly in wireless systems. 'Those who still focus on wired robots are falling behind. This development is moving fast,' concludes De Graaf.
