Starting today, the municipality of Utrecht will urgently fell 116 trees. These are located in Park Transwijk, on top of a drinking water storage facility. Cracks have been discovered in the reservoir due to the weight of the trees, allowing rainwater to enter.

In November last year, the enterococci bacteria was detected in the water reservoir, after which the entire city had to boil its water for four days before use. Following the discovery of the bacteria, research was carried out by drinking water company Vitens, which led to the discovery of the cracks in the reservoir. The risk of another contamination of the drinking water has therefore not yet been eliminated.
Previously known
Vitens already applied for a felling permit from the municipality last July due to the risk posed by the trees to the reservoir. This application was still under review, but with the new findings, the municipality has now started felling the trees. The first three trees that posed a direct risk to the surroundings have already been removed.
Replanting
For every tree that is felled, a new tree will be planted, the municipality states. A total of 81 new trees will be planted in Park Transwijk, but there is not enough space for all 116 trees. The remaining 35 trees will be replanted in the Waterwinpark in Leidsche Rijn.
