In the Moerwijk district of The Hague, construction of the city's first Collector Field has officially started. Alderman for Energy Transition Arjen Kapteijns and project leader Roy Verhagen (Finovi) marked the start with the first drilling activities.

Beneath the artificial turf of the sports fields, a system is being installed that captures heat from the sun and stores it in the ground. This sustainable heat is then used to warm three primary schools and a daycare centre nearby. In summer, the same system can also cool the buildings. This creates a smart, future-proof energy supply for the district. The system, called Collector Field, also improves comfort on the pitch itself: by removing heat, the artificial turf stays cooler in summer, making sports and play more comfortable.
Huge potential
With this project, the municipality expects to reduce CO2 emissions by around 30,000 kilograms per year. Alderman Kapteijns said: 'The Hague has more than 200 sports fields. If this system proves successful here, there is huge potential to make more buildings sustainable using sports fields.' Finovi is realising the Collector Field on behalf of the municipality of The Hague. The sports field, including the sustainable system, is expected to be put into use before the summer.
