Cost advantage mainly visible with good preparation and a long-term approach

Ecological mowing management does not necessarily have to be more expensive than traditional mowing. In many cases, the management approach can actually be cheaper. This is shown by recent research into the costs and effects of different forms of mowing management in public spaces. The research results published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature can be found here.

According to the researchers, ecological mowing management not only benefits nature but can also be financially advantageous. The approach focuses less on neat and frequent mowing and more on strengthening biodiversity and the quality of the area. As a result, the number of mowing cycles can be lower and management can be organised differently.

Green space gains a broader role within the design of public space and can contribute to a healthier living environment.

Added value for public space

According to the research, the benefits are not limited to costs. Ecological mowing management can also contribute to other goals in public space. For example, it can strengthen biodiversity, improve water retention and reduce heat stress. It may also help limit soil compaction. As a result, the researchers state that this type of management offers more than just functional maintenance. Green space gains a broader role within the design of public space and can contribute to a healthier living environment.

Approach determines the outcome

According to the researchers, the cost advantage does not arise automatically. Good preparation and clear agreements between client and contractor are important. Contract forms and an approach that fits the location also play a role. When municipalities and green professionals organise management in an integrated way and with a long-term vision, the research indicates that costs can remain the same or even become lower than with traditional mowing.
