Sekisui Alveo is introducing a new method for attaching shockpads under artificial turf fields. With a specially developed hot-air welding device, rolls can now be welded together instead of joined with tape. This is expected to make on-site installation faster, cleaner, and more sustainable.
Until now, installing a full-size football field required more than five kilometres of tape. By welding the rolls together with hot air, no additional materials are needed. This reduces on-site waste and simplifies recycling. The technology was developed in collaboration with BAK Technology AG.
The device is equipped with two hot-air blowers and can weld more than five kilometres of shockpads in less than a day. The manually operated machine pushes and presses the rolls together, creating a strong and even bond. According to Thomas Frey, Application Development Manager at Sekisui Alveo, this delivers a faster and more precise result than using tape.
Advantages
Internal tests show that the new welding method works at least as fast as traditional tape installation, the company reports. "The welded seams are stronger and more consistent, and any repairs are easier to carry out. In addition, the risk of seams coming loose during artificial turf installation is smaller," says Frey.
Presentation at FSB
The new welding technique will be presented this week during FSB 2025 in Cologne. Visitors can see the prototype in action at stand A11 in hall 10.2. Product samples and visuals will also be on display.
