Extra room for implementation
The European Commission has indicated that the introduction of the European Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is likely to be postponed. The decision still needs to be approved by the European Parliament and the Council. According to PEFC, the delay could give companies the opportunity to better prepare for the new obligations.
"Some companies are already well advanced in their preparations, while others are still waiting," says Marten de Groot, National Secretary of PEFC Netherlands. "For the first group, the postponement feels like a setback, but for others it offers room to properly set up processes and systems. At the same time, it also creates uncertainty in the market, making it difficult to determine a clear course."

The goal of the EUDR—to combat deforestation and promote sustainable trade—remains unchanged.

Support through standard module
Companies have long faced uncertainty surrounding the IT system and country classification. With the additional time, they can make their supply chains more transparent and adjust their systems. To assist certificate holders, PEFC has developed an additional standard module: the PEFC EUDR DDS. This module provides guidance for a due diligence system and risk analysis, based on the existing Chain of Custody standard. PEFC emphasizes that the goal of the EUDR—to combat deforestation and promote sustainable trade—remains unchanged. The postponement is primarily intended to ensure a more careful and effective implementation.
