First regenerable soot filters for light diesel machines showcased at TKD

The tightened directive from the Netherlands Labour Authority on diesel engine emissions (DME) has been in effect since late 2023. It places stricter requirements especially on light diesel machines up to 19 kW without a soot filter. Machinery supplier Intrak recently demonstrated a directly applicable filter solution that has already been tested in practice.

Although Stage V diesel engines are technically advanced, those with power outputs below 19 kW often lack a soot filter. According to the Labour Authority, this is no longer acceptable. Employers must protect workers from exposure to DME — even if the machines formally meet emission standards. If replacing machines with electric alternatives is not feasible, technical measures must be taken. Intrak responded by introducing a simple, regenerable soot filter, mounted on existing machines.

Visitors were surprised by the amount of visible soot collected: more than 70 grams.

Filter already in use and visibly effective

During the Technische Kontakt Dagen (TKD), Intrak demonstrated the difference between a new filter and one that had run for 20 hours on a test machine. The used filter contained more than 70 grams of collected soot.
The solution is no longer in the research phase: the filters are installed and currently being actively tested and monitored in the field. Visitors to the stand were surprised by the amount of visible soot that had been collected.

Concrete measures needed in the short term

The directive requires employers in sectors such as infrastructure and landscaping to act swiftly. Anyone using diesel engines under 19 kW must assess whether additional measures are necessary.
Solutions like Intrak's demonstrate that relatively simple options are already available. At the same time, the directive underlines the importance of a structural transition to more sustainable machinery.

More information about obligations and options can be found on the website of the Netherlands Labour Authority.
