Aluminum planters coated in building colors

'There is a growing demand for rooftop and façade greenery,' says Coen Bal, who works as product manager for rooftop and façade greenery at idverde NL. He looks back with satisfaction on a major project in Eindhoven: De Gebroeders. 'This project was quite a challenge due to its size and tight schedule. We used many coated planters and retaining walls from FURNS, in the same colors as the two residential complexes of De Gebroeders. We had never used coated aluminum on this scale before.'

'The green design of the residential complexes creates a harmonious look and improves water retention,' says Bal. 'We are very pleased with the result. The colors unify all elements beautifully.'
As urbanization continues in the Netherlands, greenery becomes increasingly valuable. Municipalities, architects, contractors, and developers are becoming more aware of this. Bal clearly notices this trend. 'The demand for rooftop and façade greenery is growing. Greenery is increasingly being included in plans for new construction and for renovation of existing residential complexes.
Maintaining greenery on roofs and façades requires specialized expertise. Years after installation, you still want the greenery to look good. That's why idverde NL is often involved early in the process. We offer customers the full package: installation, maintenance, and advice. The earlier idverde NL is included in the planning, the more we can share our knowledge and experience in rooftop and façade greenery.'
In recent years, idverde NL has often been invited to participate from the very start of building projects.

long-term partnerships

Bal has been working as a specialist at idverde NL since 2018. The company is part of the international idverde group, which operates in France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, and the Netherlands. With over 500 employees, idverde NL operates from around twenty locations.
Clients of idverde include project developers, small and large businesses, holiday parks, sports clubs, healthcare organizations, housing corporations, and various (semi-)government organizations. They value idverde NL for its specialized expertise. The company aims to build long-term partnerships, acting both as advisor and discussion partner. 'Our employees think along and take responsibility,' states the idverde NL website.
'My mission is to deliver a high-quality product with a long lifespan. I feel responsible for that,' Bal explains. 'To deliver a good product, it's important to be involved in discussions as early as possible. This allows us to contribute ideas from the start and provide the right advice.'

corten steel

idverde NL has been familiar with FURNS street furniture for a long time and has frequently collaborated with the Uden-based company. 'We had previously used coated aluminum from FURNS, but never on this scale and size.
The architect of De Gebroeders wanted planters and retaining walls from FURNS in the color scheme of De Gebroeders. Due to the scale and tight schedule, it was exciting whether everything would be delivered on time and in the right place,' explains Bal. 'The main contractor for the project was Ten Brinke, and we received our assignment through Oranjedak.
De Gebroeders consists of two residential complexes, two "brothers": the Lodewijk and the Willem.'
All street furniture on the Lodewijk is coated in the red tone of the bricks, and on the Willem in a beige sand color. 'On the Lodewijk, both aluminum and corten steel were used, but the corten steel isn't visible—it's covered with wood, and the wooden façade continues as a whole.'
All visible planters and retaining walls from FURNS are made of aluminum because this material can be coated. 'Corten steel is more robust but cannot be coated. Aluminum is softer but suitable for coating.'
Solar panels were installed on the highest roofs. Bal also mentions that the Lodewijk has a sedum roof, while the Willem has planters attached to the façade, equipped with railings.

wadis

idverde NL partnered with FURNS due to positive experiences, especially in custom work. 'Everything at De Gebroeders was custom-made; it had to fit exactly and meet the contractor's requirements. This succeeded, and the project was completed in late summer 2022.
idverde NL provided maintenance and follow-up care in 2023 and was involved in maintenance again in early 2024.'
Retention crates were installed on the roofs of De Gebroeders. Various options were explored for capturing and slowly draining rainwater. 'The municipality of Eindhoven set requirements for rainwater retention that we had to meet. Wadis were created in open ground for both the Lodewijk and the Willem.'

climate adaptation

'Water retention will become an increasingly important part of construction projects in the future. The system we used here at De Gebroeders, and in other places, also offers opportunities to prevent waterlogging on building sites. It is wise to address water retention as early as possible in the planning process.'
Bal hopes to carry out more projects like this in the future. 'Every project is unique and requires customization. This varies for every client, and that's what makes it interesting. My mission is to green more and more buildings, contributing to a healthy living environment and climate adaptation. Green roofs provide opportunities for cooling, water buffering, and contribute to biodiversity.'
