Modiform and Solinatra have launched a new collaboration to develop and bring to market biobased and biodegradable plant pots. The fully plant-based pots are produced by Modiform using Solinatra material and offer growers a completely fossil-free, PFAS-free solution that is compostable in cold soil conditions.

Modiform is entering into the partnership with Solinatra driven by the ambition to use as little fossil-based virgin plastic as possible. Both parties signed an agreement affirming their shared commitment to a green and sustainable future.

The natural pots from Modiform made with Solinatra have been successfully tested in commercial growing operations for ornamental plants, houseplants, and leafy vegetables. The trials showed that the pots have no negative impact on plant growth. As one grower involved in the pilot projects noted: "Plants grown in the Solinatra pots grow just like you're used to—it's fantastic to have a fossil-free solution!" After the cultivation period, the pots can be planted directly into the soil along with the crop, where they then biodegrade naturally.

Modiform expects to launch several new products annually through its collaboration with Solinatra.

Modiform, known for its plant pots, trays for young plants, packs, and transport trays for the international market, expects that the collaboration with Solinatra will enable the launch of several new products each year. These innovations will support the company's goals of reducing its environmental footprint and using natural resources responsibly.

A world without plastic waste

Robert de Jong, CEO of Solinatra, says: "Solinatra and Modiform are a perfect match: plant-based pots for sustainable plants! It's an earth-to-earth solution for responsible cultivation. At Solinatra, we aim to create a world without plastic waste through innovation. This partnership with Modiform represents a major reduction in CO2 emissions."
Peter Linthorst, CEO of Modiform, adds: "Our plastic plant pots, made from recycled plastics, are also fully recyclable. Unfortunately, not all markets recycle sufficiently. In those cases, biodegradable pots can offer a solution. In addition, there are specific applications for these 'cold soil compostable plant pots' and related products. Our biodegradable pots promote healthy plants and support nature without compromising on quality."
