Which trees should we plant in today's cities?

Trees are the green foundation of our cities. They provide shade, capture CO2, enhance biodiversity, and improve residents' well-being. Determining which tree species are best suited for urban environments is anything but simple. To help guide this process, trade magazine Boomzorg is organizing the Tree Selection symposium on Thursday 16 October 2025 at Boomkwekerij Udenhout.

Central question of the symposium: Which trees should we plant in today's cities? An urgent matter, especially now that the climate is changing rapidly and urban areas are struggling with heat stress, water overload, and ecological degradation. Selection lists such as the Leidse Register or the list from Stichting Natuur & Milieu are in circulation, but according to many tree managers, these are often too one-sided. There is a need for broader and better substantiated criteria for species selection.

Henrik Sjöman

Scientifically substantiated

Keynote speaker is Henrik Sjöman from the University of Alnarp (Sweden). Sjöman is known for his pragmatic and scientifically substantiated approach to tree selection. He argues that we need to look beyond provenance or mere nativeness; ecological compatibility and climate resilience are just as important.

In addition to the keynote, there will be short pitches and panel discussions on topics such as using CSR models in species selection, hands-on experiences from nurseries, and insights from urban tree management. The symposium thus offers a platform for knowledge exchange between science, policy, and practice.

The symposium is an initiative of Boomzorg (NWST publishing), hosted by Treeport Midden-Brabant and Treeport Zundert. The event is aimed at tree managers, green space managers, growers, policymakers, and other green professionals involved in urban planting.
