Corten Steel Popular for Its Warm Color
'We notice that clients often either reflect the colors of their homes in the garden or deliberately seek contrasts,' says Jurgen Broos, owner of Broos Groenvoorziening, based in Hoeven, North Brabant.

'The design of this front yard in Oud Gastel is characterized by organic shapes,' Broos explains. 'People who want light-colored elements in their gardens often choose the white planters from Adezz, a company from Uden we have been working with for over ten years. Corten steel is also becoming increasingly popular because of its warm color. We recently used it in a garden with organic shapes in Oud Gastel, near Roosendaal.' The roof tiles and the peach stone pathways in the garden closely match the color of the corten steel.
Front Yard with Corten Steel
'A private client in Oud Gastel recently asked us to install corten steel planters and retaining walls with organic shapes in the front yard,' says Broos. 'We had previously designed their backyard as well. The front yard already featured organic shapes, but the client wanted to emphasize these further in the new design. The warm color of corten steel appealed to him. We highlighted the garden's elevation changes with corten steel retaining walls, supplied by Adezz. We've been working with Adezz for about ten years, initially when we were looking for white planters. These remain popular, but demand for corten steel, which emerged later, has been growing rapidly. I suspect it's because of the material's warm color.'
For the pathways, Broos selected peach stones from Noccciolo. 'Their warm orange hue complements the corten steel and the roof tiles of the house. Peach stones are more sustainable than bark mulch. They are made from peach pits and were also chosen by the client for climate adaptation reasons, given the changing climate.' The planters contain various perennials and ornamental grasses, providing year-round visual interest. 'The planting includes prairie plants as well as species with colorful flowers and foliage.'
Family Business
Broos Groenvoorziening is a family business founded in 1961 by Jan Broos, grandfather of the current owner, Jurgen Broos. 'Back then, it was called J. Broos Tuinen. In 1984, my father Stan took over and renamed it Broos Groenvoorziening. I took over around the turn of the century. My father is still a co-owner; he's 62, and I'm 37, so he still has a few years ahead of him. It was always my dream to run the family business. I knew from a young age that this was what I wanted to do. I attended horticultural school and later completed vocational training in Green Space. Whether my sons, aged eleven and thirteen, will want to take over one day? Sometimes they say yes, but they're still young.'
Over the past ten years, Broos Groenvoorziening has seen significant growth. 'We now have 25 employees. Yet I remain the primary contact for all projects and am involved from start to finish. I value personal contact with clients.'
Personal Approach
According to Broos, clients appreciate this personal approach. 'That's why many return to us. Some hear about us through neighbors, friends, or family. We even have clients who moved to Belgium but still have us maintain their gardens. This is why we now have locations in both the Netherlands and Belgium. Our service area stretches from Breda to Bergen op Zoom, and from Moerdijk to Brasschaat near Antwerp. My father primarily focused on garden maintenance, while I also handle garden construction. This allows us to offer complete garden solutions, which has contributed to the growth in our client base.'
In addition to garden maintenance and design, the company has expanded its services. 'We now have two full-time employees dedicated to building outdoor structures, decks, walls, and other wooden elements in gardens.'
