At IPM 2025 in Essen, Kekkilä-BVB presents a first: reed grass or reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea) as a circular raw material for substrates. This sustainable alternative to peat, perlite, bark, and coconut fibers will be introduced in Germany in the spring and later in the rest of Europe.
The reed grass used comes from former peat extraction areas in Finland. This raw material improves substrate aeration and stimulates root growth. Tests show that the top layer of the growing medium remains drier, preventing algae and mold formation. Kekkilä-BVB manages the entire production chain, ensuring a low ecological footprint and high product safety.

According to CEO Pekka Tennilä, innovation plays a key role in responding to the growing demand for substrates. "With reed grass, we offer a new, sustainable option for the market." Reed grass has properties comparable to common reed. The first substrates with this new raw material will be launched in the spring of 2025.
